Petrolina
Central America is the central geographic region of the Americas. It is variably defined either as being a region of the Americas in its own right or as the southern portion of North America. Physiographically, Central America is a tropical isthmus that connects North and South America. It includes 7 countries and many small offshore islands. Overall, the land is fertile and rugged, and dominated through its heart by a string of volcanic mountain ranges with a few active volcanos. Petrolina is a city located in Pernambuco state, Brazil. The population was 188,700 in 2000 and total area of 6,080 square kilometers. Pernambuco is a state of Brazil, located in the Brazilian Northeast. It is situated on the left bank of the Sao Francisco River across from its twin city of Juazeiro, Bahia. The two cities, making up an urban area of almost 500,000 people, are connected by a modern bridge. Sobradinho dam, enclosing Sobradinho Lake, the second largest artificial lake in the world, is located 26 kilometers upriver. The regional climate is very hot and dry. Petrolina is located in the semi arid belt from Northeastern Region, that is caractherized with low rainfall. The rainy season beggins on December month, ending at the May. After that, the climate still dry until December. Like some of its sister municipalities and towns, Petrolina is blessed with beautiful surroundings and a unique natural setting. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of nature, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people all combine to make this region one of the most important tourist attractions in Central America.
