Mercedes




Central America is the central geographic region of the Americas. It is variably defined either as being a region of the Americas in its own right or as the southern portion of North America. Physiographically, Central America is a tropical isthmus that connects North and South America. It includes 7 countries and many small offshore islands. Overall, the land is fertile and rugged, and dominated through its heart by a string of volcanic mountain ranges with a few active volcanos.
 
Mercedes is the capital and largest city of the department of Soriano in Uruguay. The city is situated on the south bank of the Rio Negro. It has a population of about 42,032 in 2004 census and is an important center of commerce and commercial port. Its main industries are based on agriculture, dairy products, paper manufacturing and industrial activities. Mercedes was founded in 1788 by the priest Manuel Antonio de Castro y Careaga with the name of Capilla Nueva de las Mercedes. The city became the capital of the department in 1857, replacing Villa Soriano. Its beautiful Rambla  is one of the most beautiful and widest in the country.

Mercedes is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
