San Carlos 1
Central America is the central geographic region of the Americas. It is variably defined either as being a region of the Americas in its own right or as the southern portion of North America. Physiographically, Central America is a tropical isthmus that connects North and South America. It includes 7 countries and many small offshore islands. Overall, the land is fertile and rugged, and dominated through its heart by a string of volcanic mountain ranges with a few active volcanos. San Carlos is a city located in the department of Maldonado 15 kilometers to the North of the capital city, Maldonado. Its population, as of 2004, is 24,771. It was founded in 1763 by the Spanish Governor Pedro Antonio de Cevallos, to discourage the foundation of Portuguese settlements in the region. Its name is originated from that of the King of Spain at the time, Carlos III. The population is of 8,252 in 2004. The Maldonado department, with an area of 4,793 square kilometers and 140,192 inhabitants, is located to the southeast of Uruguay.
