The total area is 434.10 square kilometers. The population in 2004 was 400,000 and density was 937,17 per square kilometers. The city was founded in 1852, by Bernardino de Seixas Ribeiro. It is the commercial, industrial, and agricultural center of the Northwestern region of the State. Brazil is the largest and most populous country in South America and the fifth largest in the world in both area and population.
